As man has traveled through the centuries, the olive has gone with him. this ancient fruit has voyaged from the old world into the new world, providing man with food, giving him oil for his lamps, and serving as a healing and cosmetic ointment.
The love and respect southern European people feel for olives and olive oil is centuries old. From its prehistoric home in Asia Minor, the olive tree traveled to the mediterranean basin countries of Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain and then to France.
As the Portuguese and Spanish colonists ventured into the western hemisphere, they carried the olive with them to Peru and Mexico. Traveling northward from Mexico with the Spanish Padres, the Olive was eventually brought to California. |
